Brewers vs Dodgers

Brewers vs Dodgers: The Milwaukee Brewers and Los Angeles Dodgers will meet to decide the National League pennant, with the NLCS beginning Friday at Miller This Friday night will kick off one of the most intriguing championship series matchups we’ve seen in a long time. Game 1 of the National

The National League Championship Series gives us a first-time playoff matchup, and several days off before the Milwaukee Brewers and Los Angeles Dodgers begin their battle.

The Brewers swept their first-round series, allowing only two runs to the Rockies in three games, and will have four days off before Game 1 on Friday at Miller Park in Milwaukee (8:09 p.m. ET, FS1). The Dodgers have three days off after dispatching the Braves in four games.

The Brewers have home field advantage after finishing with the best record in the National League (96-67), four games ahead of the Dodgers (92-71). The Dodgers won four of their seven regular-season meetings with the Brewers, including taking two of three in Milwaukee from July 20-22.

The Dodgers and Brewers have never met in the postseason. The Dodgers have played a Milwaukee team in a win-or-go-home setting once, facing the Milwaukee Braves in a best-of-three tiebreaker for the National League pennant in 1959. The Dodgers, then in their second season in Los Angeles, beat the Braves in two games to advance to the World Series.

Pitching was excellent for both teams in the NL Division Series. The Brewers held Colorado scoreless in 27 of their 28 innings, including two shutouts in their respective NLDS. The Dodgers started their NLDS with two shutouts, and posted a 2.06 ERA for the series.

Both the Brewers and Dodgers trailed in their respective divisions entering September, but each team finished strong. Milwaukee was an NL-best 20-7 down the stretch while the Dodgers had the second-best mark in the league at 19-9. Both needed tiebreakers to win their divisions, the first time in MLB history we had two separate tiebreakers in the same season.

Milwaukee enters the NLCS on a 11-game winning streak, while the Dodgers have won seven of their last eight.

The NLCS employs a 2-3-2 format, with the entire series televised by Fox or FS1, with Joe Buck and John Smoltz on the call, along with reporters Ken Rosenthal and Tom Verducci.

This Friday night will kick off one of the most intriguing championship series matchups we’ve seen in a long time. Game 1 of the National League Championship Series between the Los Angles Dodgers and Milwaukee Brewers will be a battle between two of the hottest teams in baseball right now.

Milwaukee is coming off an 11-game winning streak and Los Angeles has won their last seven of eight games, so Game 1 is going to be the chance for one of the two teams to keep their winning momentum going and jump out to an early lead in the series. It’ll be interesting to see if Milwaukee’s home field advantage in this series (best record in NL) can carry them past a powerful Dodgers offense. The Brewers will host the first two games of the NLCS at Miller Park in Milwaukee.

Gio Gonzalez is taking the mound for Milwaukee in Game 1 after not pitching in the Brewers’ three-game sweep of the Colorado Rockies in the NLDS. He was acquired on Aug. 31 from the Washington Nationals, and the Brewers have won all five of his starts. Gonzalez has not faced the Dodgers this season though. The decision is a bit of surprise since Jhoulys Chacin has been Milwaukee’s most consistent starter this season and was expected to get the nod for the series opener, but Gonzalez will be well rested.

After a dominant performance in Game 2 of the NLDS (8 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 3 K), Clayton Kershaw will be the Los Angeles starter on six days of rest. Kershaw has started twice against the Brewers this season and experienced mixed results. He’s 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA and struck out 12 in 12 innings, and the Brewers lineup isn’t completely incapable of scoring off the left-hander as they managed four runs in a July 21 game in Milwaukee.
All we can ask of our league championship series is that the two best teams are involved, which is precisely the case with the National League Championship Series. The Milwaukee Brewers have won 11 in a row, tying the 1970 and ’71 Orioles for the most consecutive victories heading into a championship series. The Brewers are playing with joy, commitment and a tremendous bullpen as they attempt to reach the World Series for the first time since 1982, and win it for the first time ever.

They are playing the Los Angeles Dodgers, who perhaps have a few more good players, and are motivated to win their first World Series since 1988. This is a toss-up series. It is going seven.

Three reasons the Dodgers will win
1. Starting pitching. This is the clearest advantage in the series. The Dodgers have Clayton Kershaw, whose performance in Game 2 of the NL Division Series against Atlanta — eight scoreless innings, two hits, no walks — is just another reminder that any postseason doubts are behind him, and that he’s ready to be great.

Hyun-Jin Ryu was terrific in his Game 1 start of the NLDS and Walker Buehler has the best stuff on the staff. When Rich Hill doesn’t have to start until the fourth game of a series, that is a deep rotation.

In the meantime, the Brewers have no true ace — nothing really even close — but in the sweep in the NLDS against the Colorado Rockies, Milwaukee’s starters threw a combined 12⅔ innings in three games, not allowing a run. The starters gave way to a brilliant Brewers pen, but the question is: A bullpen can sustain that kind of workload over three games, but can it over seven?

2. Power. The Brewers can hit the ball out of the ballpark, but no one in the NL does it better than the Dodgers. They hit more home runs than any Dodgers team in history, went 23 straight games with at least one homer (tying a team record) and had seven players with 20 or more homers. The Dodgers are relentless with that power; they can lead off with a dinger and have a No. 8 hitter who can go deep at any time. That great depth allows them, at times, to match up with the moves made in the Brewers’ bullpen.

3. The mix. The Dodgers are an interesting group of kids, veterans, holdovers and newcomers; indeed, in the clinching game of the division series against the Braves, all six Dodgers runs were driven in by players not on the Opening Day roster. Since then, they have acquired, among others, Manny Machado and Brian Dozier, who have never been to the World Series and are free agents after the season.

They also acquired David Freese, whose two-run single in Game 4 against Atlanta was another big postseason hit in his career. It seems as though they have so much for which to win: for all the guys who lost in Game 7 last year, for the final season of Chase Utley’s career, to keep Kershaw from even thinking about opting out of his contract, for making Machado even more interested in signing there long term and to guarantee a contract extension for manager Dave Roberts.

The Brewers aren’t just hot, they’re really good. That bullpen is spectacular: Its ERA since the start of September is 1.89, which is almost a run lower than that of any other team in that time. Manager Craig Counsell enters every game knowing that if he can get Joakim Soria, Corey Knebel, Josh Hader and Jeremy Jeffress into the game, he likely will win the last four innings. Plus, the Brewers, led by MVP-in-waiting Christian Yelich, can really score runs.

Their infield defense is also terrific, especially when Jonathan Schoop will play second base against left-handers Kershaw, Ryu and Hill. And it is time to acknowledge that the Counsell factor is real. He won two championship rings as a player and has a great touch and feel for his players, which is crucial today. He is a Milwaukee guy, and he’s trying to take the Brewers to the World Series for the first time since 1982. The players love him, and they play for him. That’s what managing, and connecting, is all about.

Cavaliers vs Pistons

Cavaliers vs Pistons: The Detroit Pistons and Cleveland Cavaliers play at 7 p.m. Friday in an NBA preseason game at Breslin Center in East Lansing. The Cleveland Cavaliers and Detroit Pistons are two of the most fun teams to watch in the NBA, and it is always a great game when the two match up. … It’s always a great time at the arena during Cavaliers vs. Pistons games.

Friday night is the first time since Mateen Cleaves’ rookie year with the Pistons that the NBA has held a preseason game at Breslin Center. That game, in October of 2000, pitted the Pistons against the Utah Jazz. Before that, it was about a once-a-decade thing. In 1991, the Chicago Bulls and New Jersey Nets met in the preseason at Breslin. On Oct. 15, 1981, Magic Johnson’s Los Angeles Lakers sold out Jenison Field House for an exhibition against rookie Isiah Thomas and the Pistons.

In the 1980s, you also might have found Magic and some NBA friends playing pickup basketball upstairs at Jenison Field House or at the old Downtown Lansing YMCA, or in a charity game at Don Johnson Field House.

Perhaps the Chicago Bulls and San Antonio Spurs can arrange a Denzel Valentine-Bryn Forbes preseason game at Breslin in the near future.

This game is technically a Cavaliers home game. It’s happening at Breslin because of MSU grad and donor Dan Gilbert, who paid for part of the recent Breslin Center renovations and owns the Cavs. There is a free Cavs Fan Fest outside the Gilbert Pavilion entrance at Breslin beginning at 4:30 p.m.

2. Some good seats are still available

As of Thursday afternoon, you could still purchase tickets together as low as the eighth row for $45 apiece. Only lower-bowl seats are being sold and those who initially purchased upper-bowl tickets have been upgraded to lower seats. Remaining chair-back seats in the lower bowl start at $35. Tickets can be purchased at MSUSpartans.com, under “tickets” and then “order tickets.” Or call 517-355-1610.

3. No LeBron, but plenty to see

If LeBron James was still on the Cavs and playing Friday, this might be a sellout. Instead, the Cavs are less interesting, though still have Kevin Love, J.R. Smith and Co. The Pistons’ roster is probably more of a draw, featuring Blake Griffin, Andre Drummond, Reggie Jackson, Luke Kennard, etc. With 20 players on Detroit’s preseason roster, it’s unclear how many of the regulars will play and how much.

Most importantly, this game marks the return of former Lansing State Journal prep writer James Edwards, who now covers the Pistons for The Athletic Detroit.

The Spurs close the preseason tonight in Orlando before the 82-game gauntlet known as the 2018-19 regular season begins. With so many new faces, a couple of injuries, and some wild numbers on both sides of the ball, the Spurs have had a roller coaster of a preseason, but regardless this is their last chance to work out some kinks before the real fun begins.

Spurs injuries: Dejounte Murray (torn ACL), Lonnie Walker IV (torn meniscus), Derrick White (sore heal)

Magic injuries: none

The balance between rest and preparation
Before losing two players — including his starting point guard — three games into the preseason, Gregg Popovich cited a study showing that it is healthier for players to get plenty of run in the preseason to prepare their bodies for the regular season than to rest them too much. Even after the aforementioned injuries, Pop remained adamant that he wouldn’t be resting any players.

So far he has mostly stuck to his word. LaMarcus Aldridge is the only (healthy) main rotation player who has sat out a game, and while newly-minted starting point guard Derrick White is going to sit tonight’s finale out with some slight soreness in his heel, this is mostly being reported as a precautionary move to make sure he’s completely healthy for opening night.

The Spurs obviously need to do whatever it takes to keep White (and any of their other remaining guards) healthy, but time is also not on their side as they prepare for October 17 and beyond, so how will Pop approach tonight’s game? Will the bout of injuries convince him to rest even more players, or will he go about business as usual in the last meaningful minutes his players will see before the rubber meets the road?

PAJU, South Korea, Oct. 11 (Yonhap) — South Korean midfielder Lee Jae-sung missed another training session Thursday, raising questions about whether he will play in an upcoming football friendly match against Uruguay.

South Korea called up Lee, who is with German Bundesliga 2 club Holstein Kiel, for friendly matches against Uruguay and Panama this month. South Korea will host Uruguay in Seoul on Friday before meeting Panama in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province, four days later.

A Korea Football Association (KFA) official said Lee decided not to take part in Thursday’s training at the National Football Center (NFC) in Paju, north of Seoul, after he felt pain in his knee, adding that it’s uncertain at this moment whether the 26-year-old will play against Uruguay. Lee also missed Wednesday’s training at the NFC.

Lee injured his right knee during his club’s training on Oct. 2. However, he played full time in Holstein Kiel’s 2-1 loss to FC Erzgebirge Aue four days later.

Lee, who was named the South Korean league MVP last season after leading Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors to the championship, joined the national team on Monday to prepare for national team’s October friendlies.

Lee is a key player for the Taeguk Warriors. He has seven goals in 40 caps and represented South Korea at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

SEOUL, Oct. 10 (Yonhap) — South Korea will try to end a winless streak against Uruguay when they host the South American giants for a friendly football match this week.

South Korea, ranked 55th in the September FIFA rankings, will face fifth-ranked Uruguay at Seoul World Cup Stadium in Seoul on Friday. It will be South Korea’s first friendly this month before taking on Panama on Tuesday.

South Korea have yet to beat Uruguay in men’s football, only collecting one draw and six losses. The two sides last met in September 2014, and South Korea suffered a 1-0 loss.

The Taeguk Warriors will try to break a long winless drought against Uruguay with new head coach Paulo Bento, who made his South Korea debut last month. Under Bento, South Korea beat Costa Rica 2-0 and collected a 0-0 draw against Chile.

England vs Croatia

England vs Croatia: England take on Croatia in Rijeka in the Uefa Nations League just 93 days after they suffered World Cup semi-final heartbreak against. England’s Nations League game with Croatia on Friday will be played behind closed doors, but that has not stopped some Three Lions fans …

Gareth Southgate has backed England’s young guns to deal with the “strange” situation of playing in an empty stadium when they bid to avenge their World Cup semi-final loss against Croatia.

Southgate’s side were beaten by Croatia in Russia earlier this year when they stood on the cusp of their first World Cup final appearance since 1966.

That heartbreaking loss won’t be erased by a victory in Friday’s Nations League clash in Rijeka, but it would at least prove to England manager Southgate that his youthful team are continuing to develop.

Southgate has selected two teenagers — Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho and Chelsea’s Mason Mount, currently on loan at Derby — in his squad, while Leicester’s James Maddison has been called up for the first time.

Watford’s Nathaniel Chalobah is another hoping to win his first cap, with Leicester’s Ben Chilwell and Tottenham’s Harry Winks aiming to win their second.

“The team we play will be a team we believe in, whoever is ready to start,” Southgate told reporters on Thursday.

“There’s nobody in the squad that’s here that we were not thinking of putting into the team.

“It’s not experimentation, it’s players we believe in.

“Players that, OK, in a lot of cases are relatively inexperienced at the highest level, but players we’ve enjoyed working with, have shown in training this week that they can handle this level.

“We’ll pick a team that we think is the best one to win the game.”

It will be an especially unusual test for England given the Stadion HNK Rijeka will be deserted while the hosts complete a UEFA ground ban for having a swastika image on the pitch during a Euro 2016 qualifier against Italy.

It will be a strange experience. I guess we effectively do that every day of our lives – we play football in front of a handful of people watching, so it’s not totally unique,” Southgate said.

“But for a match situation, in an international, very different.

“I am sure Croatia feel the same. For them, not to have the encouragement of what is an incredibly passionate support will be very different for them.

“So it’s a shame especially for our travelling fans, who were brilliant for us all summer and so many of whom haven’t missed an England game for years.”

Croatia finished as World Cup runners-up after losing the final to France and Southgate is expecting another stern examination from Zlatko Dalic’s team.

“I am looking at their midfield – Modric, Rakitic, Kovacic, with Rebic and Perisic. I think they’re OK!” he said.

“So, it’s a really good test for us. We’ve obviously got a different team from the team that played in the semi-final and it’s a good challenge for us.

“These big matches against top teams we’re learning a huge amount from.”

Belgium vs Switzerland

The Nations League returns tonight with seven clashes as the competition hots up in the battle for Euro 2020 qualification.

Scotland took to the field for their second game of the competition on Thursday evening, where they threw away a one-goal lead in Israel after enduring a torrid second half.

Tonight sees England return to action when they face Croatia, looking for revenge after their World Cup semi-final heartbreak in July.

Here is how you can watch each of the seven Nations League clashes this evening.

Belgium are looking to build on their opening Nations League win over Iceland when they take on Switzerland.

Roberto Martinez’s side cruised to a 3-0 victory away from home but find themselves second in their group after Switzerland thumped the same opposition 6-0.

Belgium have lost just once in their past 28 fixtures and a strong favourites to see off Xherdan Shaqiri and co, although they will have to do so without several star players.

Kevin De Bruyne has missed much of the Premier League season with a knee injury and was not picked in the squad by Martinez.

South Florida vs Tulsa

South Florida vs Tulsa: The NCAAF College Football South Florida Bulls vs. Tulsa Golden Hurricane Preview and Predictions by Gracenote on 10/09/2018 South Florida hopes to celebrate its return to the national rankings by improving to 6-0 for the second straight season when it visits Tulsa for an American Athletic Conference matchup Friday night.

Unbeaten South Florida looks to keep pace in a top-heavy AAC when it travels to face Tulsa on Friday at 7 p.m. ET. The Bulls are 5-0 and averaging more than 200 yards rushing and 200 yards passing — but they also allow 200-plus in each. In the latest USF vs. Tulsa odds, the Bulls are favored by seven points, while the over-under, or total number of points Vegas thinks will be scored, is 61. Before you make any USF vs. Tulsa picks, check out what the SportsLine Projection Model has to say.

The SportsLine Projection Model simulates every FBS college football game 10,000 times, and those who have followed it have seen massive returns. Over the past three years, this proprietary computer model has generated a jaw-dropping $4,210 profit for $100 bettors on its top-rated point-spread picks.

The model made some huge calls in Week 6, including recommending Texas (+226) on the money line in its massive upset of No. 7 Oklahoma. It finished the week on an 8-2 run on all of its college football picks, and when it comes to top-rated picks, it is now an impressive 64-52 on the year. Anyone who has followed it is way up.

Now, the model has simulated South Florida vs. Tulsa 10,000 times to produce strong against-the-spread and over-under picks. We can tell you the over hits in more than half of simulations, but the model also has generated a point-spread selection that cashes nearly 70 percent of the time. This pick is available only at SportsLine.

The model knows USF can beat teams on the ground, as it did Saturday against Massachusetts when Jordan Cronkite rushed for 303 yards and three touchdowns in a 58-42 victory. Cronkrite ran for 129 yards on 15 carries in a 20-13 win over East Carolina, including the 80-yard winner in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Blake Barnette can also beat teams with his arm or his feet. He threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more in a 48-37 win over Georgia Tech in Week 2 and tossed a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns as the Bulls rallied for a 25-19 win over Illinois.

Just because South Florida has been rolling offensively doesn’t mean the Bulls are a lock to cover Friday.

Tulsa is just 1-4, but each loss had substantial opportunities. The Golden Hurricane outgained Temple 368-300 but lost 31-17, led Arkansas State early but succumbed 29-20, lost to Texas 28-21 on a fourth-quarter Longhorns score and led Houston 26-17 in the fourth quarter before the Cougars went on a 24-0 spurt, including 17 points in 91 seconds.

In an effort to jump-start the offense, Tulsa went with freshman Seth Boomer at quarterback last weekend, replacing Luke Skipper. Boomer passed for 227 yards against Houston — 50 yards over the team’s season average — with one touchdown and one interception.

Tulsa does most of its damage on the ground, led by sophomores Shamari Brooks and Corey Taylor. Each has 92 carries and four touchdowns.

Dodgers vs Brewers

Dodgers vs Brewers: The Milwaukee Brewers and Los Angeles Dodgers will meet to decide the National League pennant, with the NLCS beginning Friday at Miller. This Friday night will kick off one of the most intriguing championship series matchups we’ve seen in a long time. The Dodgers’ Justin Turner, left, and the Brewers’ Christian Yelich will try to lead their teams to the National League title when they open the best-of-seven NLCS on Friday in Milwaukee.

Storylines
Dodgers: The Dodgers are one series away from the chance to redeem themselves after a runner-up finish against the Houston Astros in seven games of the World Series last year. They’re playing with the ‘win-or-bust’ mindset right now and the expectations for the team are high, from the fans to the front office. The general focus for L.A. in Game 1 will be whether or not Kershaw can hold off a Brewers offense hitting .272 and playing in front of their home crowd. Second to that, Friday night’s game could be a potential test for whether or not the Dodgers’ offense can break through the Brewers’ back-end trio of Josh Hader, Jeremy Jeffress and Corey Knebel in the bullpen if they fall behind early on in the game.

Brewers: The storyline for Milwaukee in Game 1 is whether or not this squad can use their home-field advantage early on to force the Dodgers into a tough spot. The Brewers were 51-30 at home this season. Ever since winning the NL Central tiebreaker against the Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee has outscored their opponents 80-34 and they’ve really proved that they have the potential to break out and score lot of runs.

Game prediction, picks
Both these teams are heading into Game 1 on hot streaks but I’m giving Milwaukee the edge for this first game. Up against Kershaw, the Brewers’ offense is going to have to be operating on all cylinders for every inning of the game but I think Milwaukee can run off Christian Yelich’s success and energy from the home crowd.
